Placemaker Best Practices

How does editing work?

Thanks for joining our Placemaker community! We're excited to have you. Keeping all the places in the world accurate and up to date is no easy feat, and we couldn't do it without you. Below, we have provided some guidelines about editing places so that we can keep things tidy and standardized.

When someone sees wrong or missing information about a place in FSQ Open Source Places, they can suggest an edit. Once suggested, it must get enough confirmations from our Placemakers to actually be applied to the place. We call this "voting". You can vote that a suggested edit is correct, incorrect, not applicable, or suggest a different value for the field.

General Guidelines

Flagged Tasks

These tasks ask you about the status of a place. They could ask you if a place is closed, if two places are duplicates, a place should be private, or if it should be removed from our dataset for other reasons. You should try to choose the most accurate flag for a POI.

Closed

Duplicates

Private

Places should be marked private if:

Inappropriate

Use these flags to indicate the place is offensive, fake, or spammy, so that we know to remove it from our dataset.

Doesn't Exist

Use this flag if the place is not real.

Detail Tasks

These suggestions are about the basic place information like name, address, and related URLs.

Match Places Tasks

Matching

Check to see if any of the places listed are an obvious match to the Foursquare place you are currently viewing based on the information provided. Make sure that they are actually referring to the same place, as this process will create a link between an external place and the Foursquare place. So, for example, if a place closes at one location and reopens down the street, those two locations would not be considered the same. Use the same judgement you would use when deciding whether two places are duplicates.

Not a Match

If any of the places listed do not match the current place, you can optionally choose to mark them as either closed or invalid (not real) in the menu next to the match button. If the place is closed but is also a match, you should mark it as a match and separately propose to close the Foursquare place. Similarly, if the place is invalid but is also a match, you should mark it as a match and then separately flag the Foursquare place.

Neither

If none of the above options are suitable then no action needs to be taken. The potential place might match a different Foursquare place or be a new place we have yet to uncover.

Not Sure

If you're not sure which action makes sense, feel free to select Skip from the menu and we won't show it to you again.
